Out of Step Trailer

Out of Step features voices of four young female veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Robynn Murray, Chantelle Bateman, Kelly Dougherty, and Jen Pacanowski. The veterans wrote the pieces in Out of Step at a writing workshop presented by Warrior Writers, an organization that provides veterans with a safe space to explore, express and develop their feelings, thoughts, and memories through creative writing, performance, and visual arts. Each woman’s writing and voice are interpreted in dance and the dance chorus evokes their changing views and breaking away from the conformity and regiment of military life. The writing and voices of these young veterans offers a glimpse into their emotional journey from idealistic military recruits, to coping with PTSD, to healing and working for peace in a chaotic world. There is a deep necessity for veterans to create when so much in their lives has been shattered. A profound sense of hope comes from the ability to rebuild and transform. The women’s stories are powerful, raw, emotional, and haunting content that is challenging, but definitely open to interpretation in dance, music and video. As an artist who deals with political subjects, I am interested in human stories and what they tell us about society.

Out of Step is available as a single screen video production and as a two-channel or four-channel video/sound installation. In a gallery setting, the four-screen installation is projected life-size on four walls of the gallery, with the four solo dancers and the audio stories of the four vets moving from one wall to the next while each of the other three walls displays different views of the chorus of dancers slowing moving out of step. The two-screen installation is projected life-size side by side with a soloist on one screen and the chorus on the other The project is also available as a single-screen, high definition digital video for theater projection.
